Rob Kaplan: Investing in Texas Education is Key to Our Economic Future

In his editorial, Rob Kaplan explains how educational attainment is trailing in Texas, especially among minority students.  A recent survey of small businesses across Texas revealed that the biggest concern when considering expansion was the difficulty of hiring workers with the right skill set.  Kaplan states that the Dallas Federal Reserve frequently hears from employers that they are increasingly shouldering the burden of training workers on matters that they could have learned in school.

Kaplan discusses the commitment that the Dallas Fed has to continue convening businesses and community leaders to examine new and innovative ways to improve the education of children in Texas and spotlight effective education initiatives. “Unless we boost the educational attainment of young adults in Texas, we are missing an opportunity to not only attack inequality, but also to increase the productivity and spending power of Texans,” he says.
